Pterygium is a benign (noncancerous) growth that affects the clear part of the eye in some patients. It is more common in individuals working outdoors or in areas with a lot of sunshine. In addition to being a cosmetic concern, pterygium can cause a decrease in vision once it extends towards the center of the cornea. Removal of the pterygium is a same-day procedure performed at the ambulatory surgery center.
